Celebrating 20 Years of Total Commercial Equipment: a Q&A with founder Phil

This September, Total Commercial Equipment proudly marks 20 years in business. From humble beginnings to a national provider of complete project solutions, it’s been a journey built on hard work, resilience, and a vision for growth.

To celebrate this milestone, we sat down with our founder, Phil, to reflect on the early days, the achievements that shaped the company, and his hopes for the future.

Origins & Journey

What inspired you to start the company 20 years ago?

I was employed by one of our now competitors but realised it wasn’t the right future for me. A brief joint venture with a technician gave me the push to make the move. I knew I could succeed if I backed my own ability.

Do you remember the very first day of business and what was it like?

Yes! It was a nervous occasion with so many unknowns. I had a plan, but it was very brief and mainly in my head. I had no idea on where this journey would take me. All I knew was that I was in for some hard work and plenty of risk taking!

What were some of the biggest challenges in those early years?

Like many new businesses, the early years came with plenty of challenges, from building a laundry division without our own brand, to managing cash flow, and keeping stock moving at the right volume. Finding the right team and building trust was also a big focus. Each hurdle taught us resilience and became part of the foundation for the company’s future success.

Reflections & Milestones

Looking back, what achievement makes you most proud?

Starting from the bottom of the SA commercial kitchen equipment industry and growing to be among the leaders. Securing the exclusive distributorship of Primus, one of the world’s leading commercial laundry brands — and proving ourselves nationally. Purchasing and moving into our Ware St property, which stands among the best facilities in the industry.

A highlight was earning the trust of Alliance’s CFO early on in our partnership with Primus, who backed us during our growth phase. We delivered on our word and that moment set the tone for the strong, long-term relationships we’ve built with our suppliers and clients ever since.

Team & Culture

What role has the team played in this 20-year journey?

I have been fortunate enough to have had some great staff join the team and remain on the team. They have been pivotal in the company’s ability to grow and become successful. To them I am forever grateful.

What’s one company tradition or value that has carried through since the very beginning?

To build a highly respected company offering creative solutions, industry leading product options and valuable after sales service to our customers.

Future Vision

Where do you see the company in the next 10 years?

I see the company remaining one of the strongest commercial kitchen equipment suppliers here in South Australia. I want Total CE to grow to become the largest and strongest national commercial laundry equipment supplier in Australia.

A final word

From a small start to a leading name in commercial laundry and kitchen solutions, Total Commercial Equipment’s 20-year story is one of resilience, growth, and partnership. As Phil reflects on the past and looks to the future, one thing is clear: our success has been built together with our team, our clients, and our partners.

Here’s to the next 20 years of innovation, service, and complete project solutions.
